[ENGLISH] Member Survey AMARC Europe: Digitalisation and the European Community Media Sector

Dear AMARC Europe members,
Dear friends and colleagues from the community media sector in Europe and worldwide,

The current technological shift to digital communication (infra)structures, the visible effects of big internet platforms and streaming services on the way we consume and produce media and information, the shift in the participation in democratic discourses and the impact on the (community) media landscape in Europe will be one key area for the up-coming work of AMARC Europe and also a key discussion point at the AMARC Europe General Assembly holding in autumn 2020.

Therefore, we want to start a discussion with an initial member survey on the ways the current on-going technological developments are impacting the work and existence of our members and the community media sector and which answers and strategies have emerged out of these challenges.

Your answers will help to develop an AMARC Europe digitalisation strategy, common projects, activities and answers to the common challenges.

We would highly appreciate if you could fill this short questionnaire. Thank you!

Muchas gracias!

AMARC Europe Mitgliederbefragung:
Die Digitalisierung und der europäische Community Mediensektor

Liebe AMARC Europe Mitglieder,

Vielen Dank!

Together with our partners from Ireland, Hungary, Basque country, Germany and Austria we will organize the next SMART pilot training for community media trainers in March in Vienna and an exchange forum on media literacy for the community media sector, partners and interested persons. As partners of the Soundroutes projects we are looking forward in 2020 to provide an opportunity for international musicians, who emigrated to Europe to perform within local communities and in collaboration with local artists and link the gained experience to the community media sectors.

Besides the current and new projects our team is engaged in, an important event for AMARC Europe is ahead of us: the AMARC Europe General Assembly 2020. The initial planning has started, and we are happy to have found with CRAOL (Ireland) a great partner for our up-coming General Assembly which will take place in autumn 2020 in Ireland. In our last newsletter we reported on the decision of the Hungarian Media Council to not re-issue the licence for the Community Radio Civil Radio in Budapest. Findaquíthe full statement of Civil Radio on the decision of the Media Council.

Civil Radio will challenge the decision! Read here the new statement on the next steps:

"We take our case to the court”

Civil Radio has never been one of the leading media. Rather, its importance and significance have been achieved by speaking about those who have been rarely broadcast by other media. We are producing programmes for and with those who have not been given the opportunity elsewhere. It is painful for us to see a poorer media space without our broadcast in the air.

Our voice stays, and we do not want to remain silent. We will not give up the possibility to broadcast at a frequency. After December 21, 2019, our programs will continue to be heard on the Internet. We do our best to preserve the uniqueness of our sound and develop the surfaces through which our listeners can surely reach us.

We will not reconcile ourselves to the decision of the Media Council. We file a lawsuit to prove in the court that, although the decision was lawfully made , it is still disproportionate and unfair. The first phase of the legal proceedings does not promise a quick outcome, withdrawal of the decision seems illusory. However, in a longer process, we will point out that the current biased media regulation makes our voice weak and prevents us from the practice of an objective approach. We will give evidence that a more balanced and fair media law can bring a freer country, more truthful information for the public.

Legal representation of Civil Radio is provided byThe Hungarian Civil Liberties Union(TASZ) with the professional cooperation ofMertek Media Monitor.

We trust that Civil Radio will have frequency, and in the meantime we will continue to broadcast with fresh content and new shows:www.civilradio.hu

We sincerely thank all those who help, support Civil Radio, who are with us, listen to us. Stay with us!
